Chromatic Structure, 2026
Chromatic Structure is an exploration of how far a simple set of rules can be pushed. Built from a fixed palette of 12 colours and a foundational system of horizontal and vertical divisions, the series explores mathematics as a visual language.
After stepping away from the art world for a few years, I found myself working in a technology-heavy environment where everything operates within frameworks, and predefined systems are non-negotiable.
When I returned to my practice, I came back with questions I had never asked before. That shift did something to the way I think—whether for better or worse—and it led me to experiment with art through the lens of systems.
Chromatic Structure began as a way to explore that.
By limiting myself to a predefined palette of 12 colours and a strict set of compositional rules, I created a framework where every artwork is built from the same foundation. At first, this may feel restrictive. But very quickly, I saw the limitations expand the possibilities.
This series is about exploring everything that can exist within a set of rules, and discovering how far those rules can go.
The System
At the core of this series is a simple premise: a canvas divided into 3, 4, or 5 sections, where each section is assigned a colour from a predefined palette of 12.
To understand these possibilities, I mapped them into a visual matrix using Excel, calculating every possible colour combination across compositions.
- 3 sections = 220 possibilities
- 4 sections = 495 possibilities
- 5 sections = 792 possibilities

Across all colour configurations, this results in over 1,507 distinct artworks. And this is only accounting for colour while assuming the exact same composition.
Once composition is introduced, the system expands exponentially. The canvas can be divided in countless ways through horizontal and vertical lines, creating structural variations that push the number of possible outcomes beyond calculation—or at least beyond my math abilities.
Commissions Within the System
Collectors are invited to engage directly with the system. Each commissioned piece is created in response to their environment, while adhering to the core rules of the series:
- The predefined 12-colour palette
- Compositions built from horizontal and vertical lines
- Divisions of 3, 4 or 5 sections
Within these constraints, there is complete freedom to explore scale, proportion, and rhythm. Collectors can select formats and sizes that suit their space, resulting in a work that is both deeply personal and structurally consistent.
Beyond commissioning original works, collectors also have the option to design their own variation within the system without acquiring the original piece. In this case, the artwork remains part of the core series, while the collector receives an archival-quality, signed print of their personalized version.
A Collaborative Approach
Chromatic Structure plays with the relationship between artist and collector. It invites participation, and in many ways, depends on it. The series evolves through interactions, and each new piece is shaped by the context and choices of those who engage with it.
It's designed for continuous expansion, where every work becomes part of a larger whole connected to a place and a person.
